Leif Erickson was an American actor whose career spanned more than five decades across film, television, radio, and stage. Born William Wycliffe Anderson on October 27, 1911, in Alameda, California, he became one of Hollywood’s most recognizable character actors and Western stars. Erickson passed away on January 29, 1986, at the age of 74.

Before achieving fame in Hollywood, Erickson proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II. He enlisted in 1942 and served as a photographer and gunner in the Pacific Theater. During combat operations, he was wounded when his landing craft came under enemy attack and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action.

Acting Accomplishments

  • Best known for starring as Big John Cannon in the hit Western television series The High Chaparral (1967–1971).
  • Appeared in more than 100 films and television productions during his career.
  • Starred alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest names in films such as On the Waterfront, Sorry, Wrong Number, and Tea and Sympathy.
  • Became a familiar face to television audiences through appearances on numerous popular series including Bonanza, Gunsmoke, Rawhide, and The Twilight Zone.
  • Built a reputation as one of television’s premier Western leading men during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.

Leif Erickson’s legacy lives on through his military service, his memorable performances on screen, and especially his iconic portrayal of Big John Cannon, a role that made him a beloved figure among generations of Western fans.
