Born on May 20, 1908, Stewart became one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors, starring in timeless classics like It’s a Wonderful Life, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Rear Window, and Vertigo. But beyond the silver screen, Jimmy Stewart built an extraordinary legacy through his courageous military service.

At age 33, during #WorldWarII, Stewart enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1941 — despite already being a major Hollywood star. Refusing special treatment, he trained as a pilot and quickly earned the respect of fellow servicemen through hard work, leadership, and bravery.

✈️ During WWII, Jimmy Stewart:
• Flew dangerous B-24 Liberator combat missions over Europe
• Served with the 445th Bombardment Group
• Led bombing raids against Nazi Germany, including the pivotal Schweinfurt mission targeting critical ball-bearing factories
• Rose through the ranks as a squadron commander and operations officer
