Brithday CakeFamous Veterans Celebrating Birthdays Today (March 29th):

Famous Veterans Born March 29, 1925: Bobby Hutchins – most people remember him as “Wheezer” — the lovable little tag-along from the classic Our Gang comedies. But Robert E. “Bobby” Hutchins had a story that went far beyond the screen.

Born in Tacoma, Washington in 1925, Bobby earned the nickname “Wheezer” on his very first day at the studio — running around so much he started wheezing. The name stuck… and so did he.

From 1927 to 1933, he appeared in 58 Our Gang shorts, charming audiences as the eager little brother who just wanted to be part of the action. He transitioned seamlessly from the silent era into the early sound films and even carried several shorts as the lead. At one point, he seemed destined to become the face of the series.

But Hollywood can be unpredictable.

As new child stars entered the spotlight, Bobby’s role quietly shrank. By age 8, his time with the gang was over. After leaving show business, he returned home to Tacoma and eventually chose a very different path.

In 1943, he joined the U.S. Army Air Forces with dreams of becoming a pilot.

Tragically, on May 17, 1945 — just days before graduating from flying school — Bobby was killed in a mid-air training collision in California. He was only 20 years old. His mother had been preparing to attend his graduation the following week.

Though his life was brief, his impact lived on in unexpected ways. The rock band Weezer later adopted their name from his character (with a slight spelling change), inspired by the childhood nickname of frontman Rivers Cuomo.

From child star… to cadet… to a name that still echoes in pop culture — Bobby Hutchins’ story is one of early fame, quiet resilience, and lasting legacy.

✨ A reminder that behind every vintage film clip is a real life, with dreams far bigger than the screen.
